Chapter 1
It was silent except for the clicking of their nails on the cold tile floor and the faint sniffing of their mother. The five tiny gray welsh corgis were hidden by the blanket of night. Only the moon lit their way. Her five children, were huddled close to each other, shivering in fear.
The mother came back to them, and licked their faces in comfort.
“Don’t go anywhere or make a sound…”
She told her children. She slipped out of sight. To most petz, a friendly, warm house wouldn’t have been so frightening. It would have been a place of love and joy. But their mother knew the truth. And she was getting them out of here. The puppies were so exposed, a shaking heap in the middle of the kitchen, unable to move or yelp for fear of being caught.
Their mother returned and urged them onwards. One puppy fell and let out a small whimper. She turned around to comfort it for a small moment before going on. They were in the family room now. He could see the glow of the fire. Their mother led them to the dog door. Ever so gingerly, she poked her head out of the door. She soon went on and the puppies struggled to follow. He could barely get over the step. When he finally managed to push open the flap, he fell onto the grass with a small whine.
His mother bared her teeth at him, obviously angry for his outburst. The other puppies followed. He could hardly believe where he was.
A slight breeze was ruffling his fur, and all around him plants and grass grew. The ceiling was higher than he’d ever seen. Maybe it went on forever, he thought.
He wondered if he was going to live out in this new world. He was surprised when she nosed him forward, growling slightly under her breath. Now, she broke into a trot and the puppies had to flat out sprint to keep up with her.
The puppies were clumsy, and many of them fell and tripped in their mad efforts to catch up with their mother. They reached a tall fence, and he realized they couldn’t go any further. His mother surprised him by simply slipping underneath it. The puppies did the same, but their process was much slower. He was the last one to go. He struggled up the small incline and then stepped onto the asphalt. His siblings were singing a chorus of wailing shrieks.
There was no reply from mother.
