HELLO!
WELCOME to Devs review of assorted edibles! tbh, i was supposed to do this like a year and a half ago, but kept putting it off not knowing where my camera was packed /shot I still couldn't find an actual video camera around (til last week), and some foods/drinks were already a year past their sell-by date, so I just decided to document the feast with pics and get it over with before these things become not-so-edible
In this episode....ASSORTED ASIAN SNACKS AND DRINKS I GOT AT THIS ONE AISLE OF H-E-B! Here s the full spread!
the contents were: canned quail eggs, sweet lychee drink, rice candy, ginger candy, canned fried dace with salted black beans, and canned milk "bubble" tea.
First off, let's start with a refreshing drink. I open the lychee water (it's got a cool hybrid plastic-can thing going on)
you may notice it says "aerated water"...yes, it was originally a carbonated drink but is now so far past its expiration date that it's 95% gone /shot
Still, even being almost totally flat, I enjoyed this drink. Lychee flavored things have a flavor that's not TOO sweet like some flavored waters, but a really delicate kind of sweet. it made for a good drink in between eating the rest of these snacks.
Moving on...it's time for the MAIN COURSE!
mmmm...canned fish and quail eggs
Here's how it all looked once I opened it (the fried dace comes packed in a lot of beans which I drizzled all over the top of the fillets)
it might not look very appealing, but to be honest, I LOVED this fish. It was smoked and semi-dry, and packed in these oily black beans which made it strongly flavorful and nothing like eating canned sardines. to cut the saltiness I ate it along with the hard-boiled quail eggs, drizzled with sriracha.
much as I enjoyed the entree, it was getting a bit salty and I have to move on to the other things, so I set the leftover fish and eggs aside for later. Now it's time for our "dessert", a nice premade milk tea drink!
it didn't really show up in the picture, but at the bottom of the glass is a lot of tiny clear chewy "pearls" as a substitute for the tapioca balls they use in bubble/boba tea. (does not look like what's shown on the can)
Ok, I have a confession to make, I'd already tried this stuff before /shot
back when I bought all this stuff, I got 2 cans of this, was too excited and drank one (I LOVE MILK TEA OK)
BUT anyway, yes I love this stuff. the canned drink itself tastes just like the actual milk bubble teas I've gotten, though the tiny little chewies in these cans aren't as good as the real thing. A nice dessert-y drink to round out a meal.
Finally, it's time for the last part of our meal, the sweets. One is a Japanese rice candy, the other is a ginger "candy" that also claims it can be made into a tea if you mix it into boiling water.
I eat the rice candy first. As you may have noticed, the box says it includes a sticker inside. Well, here it is...
I got a fox riding a tractor. Seems like this is the general theme of all the stickers because my brother has eaten a couple boxes of these and his stickers included a basketball-playing bunny, a surfing whale, and a regular pirate.
Anyway, the candy was pretty good, nothing special. The box notes that the candy comes with an "edible wrapper that melts in your mouth", it's all wrapped into the candy underneath the actual non-edible wrapper, and it's pretty good. The candy itself has a fruity flavor and is not totally hard but gets pretty chewy. I love how the wrapper says "jfc"
The very last thing I eat will be this ginger candy, in a box that looks weirdly like a small cigarette pack. I expected it to be hard candies, but it turned out to be very soft and was a little hard to take out of the wrapper.
OK, I gotta say this is definitely my least favorite of all the snacks. Like I already mentioned, this stuff is really gooey. It's like chewing on a piece of pure caramel, but possibly even MORE rubbery/chewy, and takes a bit to dissolve. Also as I chew on it forever it starts burning my mouth and throat a little. why this.
OVERALL I give this entire meal A+, except for that gotdamn ginger candy I give 4/10. I might just end up doing what it says on the back of the box and boiling it all into "tea" and see how that goes. WILL POST HERE IF I DO!
